The Boreholes subsystem of the Central Geological Database (CBDG) is one of the most important digital resources of PGI-NRI. It stores information on drilling performed in Poland from the end of the 19th century to the present. There is data from all types of drilling: research, cartographic, deposit, hydrogeological, geological-engineering, Earth heat and others. Due to the large variety of stored data, the database structures of this CBDG subsystem are very complex. Consequently, the application making publicly available borehole data is the most extensive and complicated of all CBDG applications. Thanks to this, it has advanced capabilities for precise searching and presentation of data, including basic information such as: name, location, year and purpose of drilling, but also by types of geophysical research performed in the holes, types of physical and geochemical analyses, various types of stratigraphy, or fragments of lithological descriptions. The application allows searching by simultaneously selecting boreholes from the map and based on all their available attributes.
All this and other additional information, such as archive reports related to a borehole or scans of borehole card, after selecting a specific borehole, are made available in numerous application tabs, including the possibility of their convenient export to csv files. In some cases, the user may be redirected to applications of other CBDG subsystems for more detailed information.
From the very beginning of CBDG's operation, borehole data has been publicly and freely available on the Internet using specialist applications. Their subsequent versions have always tried to use the latest available technologies and trends in building modern IT solutions. This is exactly what is happening now, when a new version of the CBDG Boreholes Application is being put into operation. It operates at the current address https://otworywiertnicze.pgi.gov.pl.
The new application was created completely from scratch, taking into account the modern requirements for web applications. Its construction was based on the experience gained during the use of the previous version of the application. The application was designed and developed by CBDG employees. Its construction and maintenance is carried out using a code repository and automatic CI/CD mechanisms
The CBDG Boreholes Application uses various search mechanisms: comparative, full-text and complex using dictionary lists as well as spatial queries. To be able to fully use their capabilities, it is worth reading the explanations included in the application Help. Additionally, each search field has a hint dedicated to this specific query.
